Embroidered Napkins

After learning the backstitch technique at the Jan August Festival, I started thinking about making handmade presents.

After searching through different materials, I finally decided to use napkins from IKEA. Yes, you heard that right — IKEA napkins!

Not handkerchiefs, which I couldn't find many choices of nowadays.

And this time, I didn't draw with a coloured pencil. Instead, I drew my design on soluble paper, so that the pencil marks wouldn't be visible on the finished embroidery.

Of course, I also needed an embroidery ring— handy both for me and for working with the soluble paper.

However, I underestimated how much time I would need.

I made six napkins in total, but I hadn't finished the last one before leaving home. So, I had to take my entire embroidery kit with me to Schiphol.

Luckily, I finished the last piece just before boarding!

Then I had to say goodbye to my scissors and needle.

(Does anyone know if it is actually possible to bring embroidery scissors and needles on a flight?)

During the whole journey, I also noticed other people doing their own handmade work at the airport and on the plane. I thought that was amazing!

It was such a fun experiment:

from handkerchief to napkin

from coloured pencil to soluble paper

from working at home to embroidering at the airport and on a flight

And finally — but certainly not least — these presents were made with love and best wishes.
